Frequently Asked Questions

What is Meningococcal Meningitis?+

It is caused by bacteria easily passed from person to person by coughing, sneezing, and kissing. If the bacteria enters the bloodstream, it multiplies and releases toxins that cause widespread damage, including damaging blood vessels and the lining of the brain, leading to severe complications.

Why should I get the Meningitis B vaccine?+

In the UK, there are approximately 1,500 reported cases of meningococcal disease annually, making it the most common cause of bacterial meningitis. The group B strain accounts for over 80% of these cases. This vaccination can provide protection for up to 88% of infection strains in England and Wales.

How many doses of the vaccine will I need?+

You will need two to four doses, depending on your age. Most children aged 2 years and over, as well as adults, will need two doses. Infants may require a 3-dose course.

What age range is this vaccination suitable for?+

The vaccination is suitable for patients aged between 2 months and 50 years old.

What should I do if I suspect someone has meningitis?+

Bacterial meningitis can be treated with antibiotics, but it is vital to seek early treatment to prevent possible irreparable brain damage and further severe symptoms. If you suspect meningitis, seek medical help immediately at your nearest hospital.
